Have you ever found yourself so busy you're running on autopilot? Me too.
Six weeks ago I was scouting a location and I fell skating into the entrance of a new trail. Y'all, it put me on bed rest for weeks. Not even when I was pregnant did I have to stay down for that long. It was awful.
The crazy thing that landed me on the back of my head was because I was trying to avoid a fall by stepping to the side of the raised pavement. Instead, I must have looked like a cartoon character from Looney Toons whose feet just completely came out from under them. It happened so quickly I just recall that I was attempting to step away and then my head bounced off the concrete. My eyes were shut, but I could see bright white light that made me squint. Next, I felt a tingling sensation from my head down my shoulders all the way through the tips of my fingers. Do you know the awful pain you get when you hit your funny bone? It was similar to that, but instead of pain, it was just a sensation. Then I felt blood under my skin spread from my nose across my cheeks. It's hard to explain, but because there was no huge open wound I don't understand how the scent traveled with the feeling.
Fortunately for me, there was one person there sitting in her vehicle between jobs for Uber. She saw the whole thing. I heard a voice say, "....I'm an Uber driver. I can get you to the hospital." It was hard to open my eyes since my sunglasses had been thrown off my head and the sun was blinding. She phoned my family and helped me remove my skates. When I tried to get up I was so dizzy I needed to sit there for a bit till it subsided. My Uber Angel walked me to her car and dropped me off at my house. My kiddos met me at the front door and hurried to get me to the ER. Regrettably, I didn't get the name of the sweet Samaritan that God put in my path, I am so grateful for her kindness. It turned out that I had to have staples put in the back of my head. There's no telling what would have happened if I had passed out and no one had been there right then. So very grateful for my Uber Angel.
The CT scan came back normal, which even the Dr. found odd considering how hard I landed. The only thing to do was to stay rested and heal. For someone who doesn't take breaks from her job very often, that was a dreaded sentence for me. I was not looking forward to it.
I don't know if I've ever posted about my lack of sleep, but that is something I have had a big problem with ever since I can remember. I lay in bed for hours sometimes before falling asleep and then once I am out, I don't even hear fire alarms. That's a proven fact. In college, there was a fire on our dorm floor and my roommates had to wake me up. All that to say, I really struggled with the idea that I needed to sleep to heal.
Strangely enough, two days later I was resting in my room when our Husky jumped up to see out my bedroom window, which is something he never does. It was the day of the severe storms in Longview. The rain had been coming down, but the sound was intense and I heard the wind increase rapidly. I walked out of my room and quickly told my son that we needed to get to the hallway. He looked over to the window and said, "Uh, Mom..." to which I looked out and saw that our giant Oak tree that must have been fifty years old or better had fallen onto our house and the roots had pulled the deck up to a vertical position.
Turns out that we lost three trees, the entire deck, our fence, my car, and the corner of our roof was broken. Fortunately, our house was built in the 1960s so its joists were tight and strong. Otherwise, the tree probably would have come through the attic and landed on my son who was at the desk underneath. God is good.
After a week of continuing vertigo, I told my friend Lisa Mull of Mind, Body, Health by Lisa, that I was so tired of having to need help to walk around my house that I needed to get well. She referred me to Dr. Tucker Woods, a Chiropractor who might be able to help. Having never seen a chiropractor before, I wasn't sure what he could do for me, but I can tell you that I don't regret that decision one bit! Obviously, since my head bounced off the concrete my neck was injured. It turns out my jaw was also out of alignment we saw in the X-rays. But, the most phenomenal part to me was that he would be able to help with my equilibrium. After my first adjustment I was able to sleep, not just rest, but actually sleep. I took a nap and felt fantastic. I am no longer having dizzy spells and I'm getting better daily.
What does all that have to do with getting on the road? Well, I had to take a detour for the last six weeks. No more. I'm ready to get the show back on the road. I was running on autopilot before the accident. Some things needed to change in my business and I just didn't have time to stop and make those adjustments. Instead, I had to be knocked down to force myself to step back. And here I am. I'm happy to know that things are looking good for the next part of my adventure.
What about you? Have you ever been forced to stop and reset some things? Tell me about it. I want to know.
