A couple of weeks ago when I was strolling downtown Longview, I had no model to shoot. As a photographer who shoots people for a living, that's harsh. I had asked two of my children to go with me, but when your mom constantly asks you to be her client more often than you clean your room, that's not ideal. It was Saturday; they had better things to do then stand in the rain with me.
However, being the determined girl that I am, I decided I'd step into a salon before the rain actually arrived and see if someone who'd just had their hair done would mind me photographing them downtown. I stepped into Bombshell Hair Design and Alisha greeted me with a great big smile. (She's too cute!). I explained to her that I was new to town and hadn't had the chance to see downtown yet, so here I was on a rainy Saturday. She was working with a couple of her clients, but both were having their hair done at that time; neither were photo ready. Instead I offered to photograph the space. She said she wouldn't mind at all.
I was like a kid in a candy store. Have I told you how much I enjoy photographing places and things?! I probably haven't. Well, it's the thrill of not having to make something respond to me that makes me giddy. I can position items, walk around them, and reposition them so many ways that I get a different image without forcing a response from anything. I don't know how long I stayed, but I took several images of her very cool space.
There's a snazzy wave couch to sit on while you're waiting to have your hair styled. Behind it sits an oriental screen that is black and has details made of shells. Each station has a different salon chair. My favorite seat is vintage and looks like what you'd find in a 1950's barber shop. That entire station has vintage items. I'm a fan of all things vintage.
The ceiling lights are square with dangling glass. There is a side entry that has cool wrought iron pendants hanging from the window. A flooring business shares that entry space with the salon and when you walk in from that side it's got a really cool vibe. It's also one of my favorite images from this impromptu session.
There is a huge window from the main street that offers some insight into Bombshell. There's a large Eiffel Tower, a palm plant in a white and gold planter, and some other novelty items. Just behind that is a wrought iron dress form near disco wall art. There's also a large vintage mirror. While a younger person may not know it's vintage and mistake it for a distressed mirror because of its flecking - I know because I am a fan of....all things vintage.
On a cool white shelf you can find an assortment of TIGI make-up, Bombshell cups, and hair styling products. Hair color is a big deal these days and Alisha's stylists have quite an array as you can see from the hair color swatches. I've considered coloring my hair. I thought I'd be okay with grays when they came; they look so good on my husband. But, alas, maybe it's something I should consider. Then again, the Bible does say that gray hairs show wisdom.
That reminds me of a story. When I was twelve, back in the 80's, hair color was all that. Not knowing if my Mom would be okay with me getting my hair colored, I decided I'd just get a strand of it dyed. It was a strand near the back of my neck. When it was set and dried, the stylist braided my deep purple strand of hair and we hid it. The only time it came out was when I put the rest up in a pony tail, which of course only happened when Mom wasn't around. The crazy thing is that my hair is so naturally dark, that the only time you could even tell it was colored was when I walked into the sun. Oh well. I'm still torn about these grays. Do tell your hair color story in the comments. Can't wait to hear them.
Blessings,
Zoe
