Anyone else feel like you're being hit by a tidal wave when it comes to information regarding using social media? Like for likes are not beneficial and frankly, just not good business. Paying for an ad that isn't targeted to your ideal client is a waste of both time and money. Not to say that you won't get any leads, but your potential increases when you know how to do it right.
In my quest for starting my business, I had to do a lot of research to help with my SEO. Before I started any kind of advertising I searched Personal Branding in the area. It surprised me how few people offered any kind of information about it in east Texas. In one way that's beneficial for me, but in another, it doesn't help me to make connections. I'm of the mind that helping one another betters all involved.
Back to the Rules. One of the best things you can learn before deciding which social media platform is the best choice for you and your business is to know
- Who is your ideal client?
- What social media can you find them on?
For instance, I have a friend who wants to niche to families and senior photography. When we were narrowing down his social media outlets, I asked him who the paying client was. For him, it's the mom. What age range is "mom"? What app is she using most often? That's the one or two he needed to be engaging on.
Ask yourself those questions first. Once you've compiled that information - and it could very well be more than one social media platform - make an account there, if you don't have one already.
The amazing thing about the internet today is that it is a gigantic classroom. Finding the best teachers can be interesting.
I enjoy getting an education. For me, the best way to do that is to pay for it. I see it as an investment to better myself and my client experience. You have to decide what works best for you.
It's important to learn the ins and outs of the platforms you choose to use. There are different analytics on each one. Deciding how often to post depends on when your client is most engaged. If they're not hopping on till the kids are in bed, no use posting at 6:30 a.m. It's more likely to be buried by the other posts that have been spread throughout the day.
Learn, learn, learn. You'll want to study how to find the analytics on the platform you're using. It will take time, but once you've posted for a few weeks, you'll start seeing a pattern of engagement.
The biggest thing you need to do is to Be Consistent. For me, blogging is a Tuesday and Thursday thing. My social media platforms are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I choose to take the weekends off to spend with my family.
I hope that this post helped you look at social media differently. If you learned anything at all, I'd love to hear what it was in the comments below!
Blessings,
Zoe
