If you've clicked on this post you have an interest in knowing if there IS a difference between headshots and branding images. It's a question I've actually asked myself recently. Since I'm both a headshot and a branding photographer, I am happy to answer this question for you!
Headshot images are generally done using a solid colored background with just the right lighting positioned to make you look professional. By that, I mean, if you come to me for a headshot I will ask you questions about what you do, who you are trying to appeal to, and what it is that you are wanting to convey in this image. For the most part, people want to be seen as "friendly and approachable". However, there are times when someone wants an image that shows they can get the job done. There are many things that factor into making that headshot say those particular things. We're talking wardrobe styling, hair, background, lighting, and accessories. Yes, a tie with a jacket versus no tie and a jacket convey two different messages.
Branding images also take all those things into account. The difference is that your headshot is going to be your social media profile image, maybe your book cover, or your billboard. Your branding images are going to be you in action. You in the office, you out of the office, you being you. These images will be what you post to go with content on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and your website. These images will be personal. They will be unique. They will be fabulous!
When you book a branding session with me I do go over the basics of a headshot image. You will have the option to have those images done in my studio, at your place of business, or at another on location setting. We're not confined to downtown Longview, Texas. Think of a city you enjoy visiting. Is it Dallas? Baton Rouge? NYC? We can schedule your session almost anywhere you'd like! Why be common? Why have what everyone else is having? I've personally, never been a fan of doing what everybody else does. I relish in being different!
Back to the branding session, after we've talked the basics, I then get deeper into knowing what your business is. We'll take time to think about the upcoming social media campaigns you're preparing. If there's going to be a reveal, for instance, let's discuss ways to generate interest using the images we shoot. Images are what attracts us to things. We stop and take notice of posts that have an image. The thing we overlook is that the stock image libraries for your field are the same images your competitors have the option to choose from for their social media marketing. Not only that, but images of YOU as your brand are more engaging than ones of just things.
Hopefully, you understand the difference between the two sessions now. I'm a visual person. Maybe you're like me. Think Food Network Star. Every time they air the judges want to know about the chef presenting the meal. What does that person have to do with the food being presented? Everything!
Because YOU are Your Brand and Your Brand Is Unique!
Meet my adorable fellow photographer and friend Somer Page of Somer Page Studios. She's THE birth photographer. The album she's holding is of the newest addition to their family. She was in the room when he was delivered. While that seems natural, for a mom to be at the delivery, his was a special delivery as he was adopted! This particular image of Somer shows how excited she was to have this little guy in her life. She wants to help you remember how special your delivery is if you're expecting. If you'd like to learn more about her work, click here and be sure to tell her I sent you. She's one of my favorite photographers in the area who has ten years experience.
Let me know in the comments if any of this was enlightening for you. Also, I'm curating content all the time. If you have questions about branding that you'd like answered, ask away. Let's learn together!
